We had our final First Steps Pistol class of 2012 in Fairfax, VA this past Saturday. There were four eager students, including one former marine who already had a solid foundation in marksmanship. We had great conversation and fun at the range. All in all, a good day.
Moving to Fredericksburg!
L.O.J. lead instructor Mike Vance has relocated to Fredericksburg, VA between Washington and Richmond. He will continue to offer classes on a limited basis in Fairfax, but most classes in the future will be offered in the Fredericksburg and Warrenton areas.
Fundamentals of Concealed Carry Draft Complete
L.O.J. Lead Instructor Mike Vance has completed a new textbook entitled Fundamentals of Concealed Carry that will be used in L.O.J.’s upcoming defensive pistol course. The book has been reviewed by two outsider readers and is nearing completion. We will likely offer the course in Warrenton, VA and Abingdon, VA early in 2013.
Personal Protection Certification Class Completed
Mike just completed he NRA Personal Protection in the Home instructor certification course in West Virginia this past weekend and is looking forward to teaching the class as soon as his credentials arrive — probably in December. Stay tuned for more details or contact Mike at mvance@lojshooting.com.
A Great Time in Moyock
Although Mike didn’t place as well as he had hoped, the October Shoothouse Shootout hosted by Academi in Moyock, N.C. was a great experience. The shoothouses provided a real challenge and the hospitality of the Academi crew was outstanding. If you get a chance to shoot in this event in the future we highly recommend it.
Coming Soon: Introduction to Defensive Pistolcraft and Concealed Carry
L.O.J. is proud to announce we will be offering a new course in January, ” Introduction to Defensive Pistolcraft and Concealed Carry.” Michael Vance, lead instructor at L.O.J., has drafted a textbook, which is currently being edited for publication. Once the textbook for the course has been published and we have identified a facility in northern Virginia that can accomodate the class we will begin accepting applications to take the course.
This L.O.J. original course will cover many of the same issues explored in NRA Basic Pistol, including:
1) Basic firearms safety and range safety.
2) How handguns and ammunition work.
3) How to maintain a handgun.
4) Pistol marksmanship fundamentals.
Because this course is aimed at the responsible armed citizen, it will also cover many elements not addressed in NRA Basic Pistol or First Steps Pistol, including:
1) The principles of responsible and effective concealed carry.
2) Combat mindset.
3) Selecting the right handgun, holster, ammunition, and belt.
4) The basics of combat marksmanship.
5) The proper way to train for personal defense with a firearm.
Stay tuned for additional details or contact the course developer at mvance@lojshooting.com
L.O.J. Instructor Competing in “Shoothouse Shootout”
Mike Vance will be competing at the “Shoothouse Shootout” at Academi’s training facility in Moyock, N.C. on October 27th. This should be a great event. We’ll let you know how it goes.
Coming Soon: Personal Protection in the Home Course
In November I’ll be earning the instructor certification for the NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course. This class combines all the elements necessary for effective personal defense inside one’s home or business. Stay tuned to the L.O.J. website for more information in the coming weeks.
September 15th and 22nd Classes a Success!
We’ve had great classes these last two weeks with excellent, eager-to-learn students. We’re looking forward to our next class in October!
September 22nd NRA First Steps Pistol
L.O.J. is proud to offer NRA First Steps Pistol on 22 September at the Comfort Inn University Center in Fairfax, VA. This class provides students with a foundation for safe handgun use. It fulfills the training requirement for a concealed handgun permit in Virginia, as well as the DC firearms training requirement for handgun registration. Students do not need to own their own firearm, although they are encouraged to bring whatever handgun they wish to the class, so long as it is unloaded. Please DO NOT bring ammunition into the classroom. The course fee of $95.00 covers all relevant training materials, including use of an instructor provided gun if the student does not have their own. It DOES NOT, however, include ammunition (approx $10 to $15 for a box of 9mm), range card ($10) or range time. The class will be held in the Patriot Board Room at the Comfort Inn from 0830 to approximately noon.
